Battling invasive ivy, blackberry, and caring for native plant communities is hard work with purpose and meaning. West Seattle has a little-known creek, Puget Creek, that is culturally important to the Duwamish Tribe. Salmon once spawned in this creek that drains into the Duwamish River near the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center. The Native Plant Salvage Alliance (NPSA) collaborates to preserve, restore and teach about native flora in Tacoma and Pierce County, Washington. The NPSA was originally created in 2003 by volunteers to support citizen plantings and habitat restoration projects occurring throughout the Puget Sound basin.
